Yesterday, I attended performance of the St. John Passion with La Petite
Band/S. Kuijken as part of the Lucerne Easter Festival in Switzerland.
Thoroughly impressed: sung OVPP (8 singers), no conductor, and Kuijken
played no less than three instruments:

8 singers in the St. John Passion would be TVPP -- two voices per part.

Actually, as much as there are original parts available.
According to the editor of the SJP in the NBA, the late Arthur Mendel,
an exceptional number of singers.

8 singers = (presumably) 4 soloists and 4 ripienists? So not really 2
per part.

Yes, those are the eight parts. And that was because he only had to perform
in one of the two main churches on Good Friday, so he had two 'choirs'
available. Rifkin suggests that the ripienists weren't used in performances
in the 1740s, as there are separate solo parts 'Tenore Servus' and 'Basso
Petrus &Pilatus' which seem to replace them.
