Maybe that explains why I'm having so much trouble with newsgroups lately.
...
Nah, it's just Earthlink again! (They "improved" their newsreader last
week.)

John
Maybe that's why I'm having trouble connecting to earthlink's news
server at home with thunderbird.

It's possible. My problem wasn't that I couldn't connect (although that can
be a problem at times), just that no new messages were coming in for a
couple of days. This happened a few months ago. and I couldn't get
newsgroup messages for about a week (talk about withdrawal!). After
googling "Earthlink newsgroup problems" (always guaranteed to get you some
hits) I discovered other people having problems, and one of their solutions
was to change the newsgroup server to some "mindspring.com" server. I tried
that for a while (it basically seemed to work), but went back to
"news.east.earthlink.net" and that also seems to still be working. My final
solution was to unsubscribe and resubscribe to all my newsgroups. But since
your problem is connecting in the first place, that's probably not going to
help you very much.

Just connected with no problems--maybe they fixed something. I was
using news.earthlink.net, then switched to news.east.earthlink.net--both
seem to work.

Thanks,
Steve

"NOT DEAD...JUST RESTING!!"
Or, as Frank Zappa might say - 'it's not dead, it just
smells funny'.
